LVNS-RAVE: Diversified audio generation with RAVE and Latent Vector Novelty Search

Evolutionary Algorithms and Generative Deep Learning have been two of the most powerful tools for sound generation tasks. However, they have limitations: Evolutionary Algorithms require complicated designs, posing challenges in control and achieving realistic sound generation. Generative Deep Learning models often copy from the dataset and lack creativity. In this paper, we propose LVNS-RAVE, a method to combine Evolutionary Algorithms and Generative Deep Learning to produce realistic and novel sounds. We use the RAVE model as the sound generator and the VGGish model as a novelty evaluator in the Latent Vector Novelty Search (LVNS) algorithm. The reported experiments show that the method can successfully generate diversified, novel audio samples under different mutation setups using different pre-trained RAVE models. The characteristics of the generation process can be easily controlled with the mutation parameters. The proposed algorithm can be a creative tool for sound artists and musicians.


Conditional variational autoencoder to improve neural audio synthesis for polyphonic music sound

Deep generative models for audio synthesis have recently been significantly improved. However, the task of modeling raw-waveforms remains a difficult problem, especially for audio waveforms and music signals. Recently, the realtime audio variational autoencoder (RAVE) method was developed for high-quality audio waveform synthesis. The RAVE method is based on the variational autoencoder and utilizes the two-stage training strategy. Unfortunately, the RAVE model is limited in reproducing wide-pitch polyphonic music sound. Therefore, to enhance the reconstruction performance, we adopt the pitch activation data as an auxiliary information to the RAVE model. To handle the auxiliary information, we propose an enhanced RAVE model with a conditional variational autoencoder structure and an additional fully-connected layer. To evaluate the proposed structure, we conducted a listening experiment based on multiple stimulus tests with hidden references and an anchor (MUSHRA) with the MAESTRO. The obtained results indicate that the proposed model exhibits a more significant performance and stability improvement than the conventional RAVE model.


Streamable Neural Audio Synthesis With Non-Causal Convolutions

Deep learning models are mostly used in an offline inference fashion. However, this strongly limits the use of these models inside audio generation setups, as most creative workflows are based on real-time digital signal processing. Although approaches based on recurrent networks can be naturally adapted to this buffer-based computation, the use of convolutions still poses some serious challenges. To tackle this issue, the use of causal streaming convolutions have been proposed. However, this requires specific complexified training and can impact the resulting audio quality. In this paper, we introduce a new method allowing to produce non-causal streaming models. This allows to make any convolutional model compatible with real-time buffer-based processing. As our method is based on a post-training reconfiguration of the model, we show that it is able to transform models trained without causal constraints into a streaming model. We show how our method can be adapted to fit complex architectures with parallel branches. To evaluate our method, we apply it on the recent RAVE model, which provides high-quality real-time audio synthesis. We test our approach on multiple music and speech datasets and show that it is faster than overlap-add methods, while having no impact on the generation quality. Finally, we introduce two open-source implementation of our work as Max/MSP and PureData externals, and as a VST audio plugin. This allows to endow traditional digital audio workstation with real-time neural audio synthesis on a laptop CPU.
